Welcome to Saint Mary of the Assumption
a culturally rich and diverse Catholic family; through our worship, educational, youth and outreach ministries, we endeavor to welcome, to love, to evangelize and to serve, making Jesus Christ present in Word & sacrament.
Church law stipulates that children should make a first confession before their first communion. We require a two year preparation to receive the sacraments. This usually occurs in their first and second grade of elementary school. Parents have the right to choose a different time, either earlier or later depending on the awareness and readiness of their child. Children need to be enrolled in a regular Religious Education Program, in English, Portuguese or Spanish, or a Catholic school in order to be eligible to enroll in a sacrament program.
This is a non-graded program, so that a child may complete this preparation at a time that is best suited to his or her needs as well that of the family. Our First Confession Program for the 2022-2023 academic year will be through in person classes or our Home Study program. All assignments must be completed with parents at home and returned to the Religious Education office before a student can receive the sacrament. The Religious Education director, Kathy Moran, will coordinate all levels of curriculum via Flocknote and/or emails with parents.
The retreat with final preparation and examination of conscience is usually held in November. The retreat begins in the Parish Center and then the children move to the upper Church for the Penance Service during which the children will make their First Confession. Date of retreat and celebration will be March 12, 2022 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am starting in the large hall of the Parish Center.
